Update: Backmans and Coveys Islands
December 3, 2006

Dear MICA Members and Friends,

We were surprised and very pleased with the announcement made by Minister Morse of the NS Department of Natural Resources at the MICA Dinner Art Auction on Friday, November 10, 2006.

Congratulations to all. This is HUGE for MICA.

In summary:
  • The Province (DNR) will work with MICA towards the acquisition of Backmans AND Coveys.
  • It is expected, pending negotiations with vendors, that both purchases will be completed by March 31, 2007.
  • MICA will be called on to contribute financially towards both purchases prior to that date.
Purchase prices have now been negotiated and agreed upon for both islands and MICA's financial contribution towards these purchases has been defined. At this time the Purchase and Sale Agreements are in progress for both islands.

Providing there are no surprises in finalizing the purchases, we have sufficient funds from our pledge campaign and fundraising activities to meet our partnership commitment for the purchase of these two islands. We will be calling in pledges once the Purchase and Sale Agreements have been finalized.

Should there be an excess of funds for this purchase resulting from our campaign, we will be calling in a percentage of your pledge, which will be defined at the time of the call in. We do hope, however, that you will consider providing 100 percent of your pledge in order to provide funds for our next project.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS PARTICIPATED IN THIS FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN. You will have helped to create a wonderful legacy for MICA, for the area, and for the province. This would not be possible without your financial support.

Bringing Backmans and Coveys Islands into public ownership will be a tremendous accomplishment. This action will make these islands available for public use and will ensure they remain in their natural state. The appearance of Backmans and Coveys from both water and land will remain as beautiful as ever.

We believe there are some of you who would still like to be part of this legacy. If so, please complete the pledge sheet (click here for the form in PDF format) . Surplus funds from this campaign will be applied towards our next acquisition project.

Again, thank you for your significant support.

If there are any questions, please contact any of our Directors.
